Background

In The Gambia, as in other parts of the world, various forms of gender-based violence occur, such as rape, domestic violence and harmful traditional practices (FGM, forced and early marriages, etc.). To address this and other issues of violence against women in April 2009, a group of NGOs and Government Institutions, in partnership with FINDECO, a Finnish Government development agency, formed a consortium called “Network Against Gender Based Violence” (NGBV) to implement prevention and response programme for Gender Based Violence (GBV). The Network thus serves as a platform for action and discussion on gender based violence issues in The Gambia. Its members are working to eliminate or reduce gender based violence in homes, schools, workplaces and in the communities.

The Network is a platform for meeting of ideas, commitment and execution of objectives of varying organizations and institutions in the public and non-state sectors working on gender-based violence. It seeks to promote closer and strategic partnerships for joint programming, implementation and resource mobilization.
